Emergency Response

Sitting at work reviewing my emergency media response plan, the irony of ironies dawns upon me. I’m responsible for emergency response. Lord have mercy. Now, don’t get me wrong. This doesn’t mean that I’m not the right person for the job. I’ve got this sick and twisted fascination with aviation accidents. I should have been an NTSB investigator. But I’m too old to apply for that job (story for another time).

So instead, I’m in charge of the media response portion of an aviation accident should it happen in my family of companies. A planner to the very end – lest I say micoplanner? – I get off on this in an almost inhuman way. Every detail of everyone’s job in the plan is spelled out down to where to find things and how to log into other things and who to call to get yet more things and how to direct the president to refrain from saying certain undetermined things, etc.

There’s a lot that goes into this, but I love that I can use my brain to do more than try to outsmart a 2 year old who is trying to manipulate me with a tantrum. The great thing about it is as I do more and more of this, I’m realizing I have a lot I can offer the helicopter industry. Perhaps once the kids are in school I can turn some of this into a lecture circuit for helicopter operators.

And then you too can know if something terrible happens on your flight, I’ll be there to tell the media we can’t talk about it until the NTSB makes a determination, but here is the history of the company…
