Play Day

Sweetness and Mr. Man enjoy afternoon playtime in the backyard.

I love Wednesdays. I particularly love Wednesdays when there is no school. I have Wednesdays off from work and when there is no preschool for Sweetness, I get to really enjoy the day with my babies. And there are major extra bonus points when it’s a beautiful day. Yes, imagine that, a warm beautiful day in Seattle in March. The world must be coming to an end.

But before it does, I can at least say I had fun. What’s more, I’m feeling like I was rather productive. Mr. Man reproduced his “double bathroom magic trick” when he got up, saving me a diaper. We had an tantrum free morning, reading books and playing. I even got to take a shower, pump and do the dog’s morning PT. Mr. Man had a nice hour-long nap while I got a bunch of photos printed for a project. Sweetness played quietly and even did a little painting. Once Mr. Man was up and about, we all had snacks and headed out to Alki Beach to meet up with Mr. Man’s little buddy and his mom.

That’s what I miss the most from my freelance days and maternity leave – the chance to just call up someone in the morning and plan to meet up – no set schedule. The sun was shining and the wind was light. It was a gorgeous morning on the water. I got to enjoy a lovely pastry at the Alki Bakery while Sweetness pointed out every boat and bus that passed. We were even able to have some adult conversation. I almost forget how to do that when the Rugrats are under foot.

Mommy snacks and drinks later, the four of us had a great walk along the beach, followed by a stop at the playground for Sweetness on the way home. Sweetness played great with the other kids there, and even came along when it was time to go without any kind of global meltdown. I think that’s something like the sixth sign of the Apocalypse, so the world must be coming to an end.

When we got home, it was lunch, followed by nap for Mr. Man and Quiet Time for Sweetness, during which Mommy cleaned up, had lunch, pureed two sweet potatoes I’d baked the other day and steamed and pureed a package of organic peas for Mr. Man (putting both in ice cube trays and into the freezer), and even had time to pump and do the dog’s PT before the gang was up and about again. At this point, while I was loving the great, productive day, I was now concerned over when the other shoe would drop. Everyone was in too good of a mood and all was going too well.

But, alas, we had a great afternoon playtime in the backyard. Sweetness even cleaned up when I asked her! And I’ve had time to write here, which I rarely do on Wednesday. As I speak, Sweetness is jumping up and down in front of Mr. Man, making him giggle profusely as dinner simmers and I await Hubby’s arrival from a post-work Costco run (due to critically low diaper levels).

I love days like these. I need so many more of them. Or, perhaps, the lack of them makes me appreciate them all the more. I hope you had a great one too!
